Is your XML sitemap valid and honest?

Most entries share the same lastmod. Google uses lastmod only if it is “consistently and verifiably accurate”, so set it to the date each page’s content really changed, or leave it out.
Why it matters
Sitemaps help discovery
A sitemap tells Google and Bing which URLs exist. It matters most for new sites, large sites and pages with few internal links.
Only accurate lastmod counts
Google ignores priority and changefreq, and uses lastmod only when it is “consistently and verifiably accurate”. A sitemap where every URL changed at deploy time teaches it to ignore the field.
Bing matters for AI too
Bing reads sitemaps as well, and Bing’s index feeds Copilot and, in part, ChatGPT search.
What it checks
Sitemap type
Whether the file is a URL set or a sitemap index that points to child sitemaps.
Entry count
Every <loc> in the file.
lastmod coverage
How many entries carry a lastmod, and how many distinct values there are.
Build-timestamp pattern
Flags files with 10+ dates where most entries share one lastmod, or where there are three or fewer distinct values.
Future dates
lastmod values more than a day in the future.
Response
HTTP status and fetch time, plus the first 20 URLs.
