Why it matters
Headings mark the parts AI quotes
AI answers lift sections, not whole pages. SE Ranking found sections of about 120–180 words were cited most, and headings are what define those sections.
Readers and agents navigate by headings
Screen readers and browser agents use headings to jump through a page. Skipped levels and a missing H1 make that harder.
AI crawlers read raw HTML
